U.S. Olympic Gold Medalist, 3-Time World Champion Swimmer

Mark Henderson is an Olympic gold medalist, world champion swimmer, and lifelong advocate for performance, recovery, and total-body wellness. As a member of the Human Touch Wellness Council, he brings firsthand experience from the highest levels of sport, along with a deep understanding of how consistent recovery supports both peak performance and long-term health.

Throughout the 1990's, Henderson became known as one of the top swimmers in the world. A versatile competitor across butterfly, freestyle, and backstroke, he spent more than nine years on the U.S. National Team and earned multiple international titles. His defining achievement came at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, where he swam the butterfly leg of the gold medal-winning U.S. men’s 4×100-meter medley relay, helping set a world record.

During his preparation for the Atlanta Games, Henderson made a decision that would shape his approach to recovery for decades to come. While training at an elite level, he purchased his first Human Touch massage chair and incorporated it into his daily routine to help reduce muscle fatigue, accelerate recovery, and maintain peak condition. The impact was immediate and lasting. That same chair remained a consistent part of his wellness routine for over 20 years, finally being retired in 2026 after helping him recover, perform, and feel his best.

Following his time in the pool, Henderson has remained deeply connected to the athletic community, dedicating his efforts to supporting athletes, coaches, and families with trusted guidance around training, recovery, and overall well-being. He has also served in leadership and advisory roles within national athletic organizations, reinforcing his commitment to the future of sport.

Today, Henderson continues to champion the role of recovery as a foundation for both performance and longevity. His decades-long personal experience with Human Touch, beginning at the height of his Olympic training and extending through everyday life, gives him an authentic and credible voice. As a Wellness Council member, he helps inspire others to prioritize recovery as an essential part of living and performing at their best.

Wellness Tips from Mark Henderson

For Mark Henderson, recovery was never something separate from training. During his years competing at the highest level, he learned early on that consistency in recovery was often what allowed athletes to perform consistently in competition.

“When I first made the U.S. National Team in 1989, I watched how seriously the veteran athletes took recovery,” Henderson says. “Massage became a huge part of my routine because it helped me stay loose, recover faster, and show up ready to race.”

Leading up to the 1996 Olympics, Henderson’s training schedule included intense double workouts, often at altitude, making recovery outside the pool essential. During that time, his original Human Touch massage chair became part of his everyday routine.

I used my Human Touch massage chair every day after training. It helped my legs and back stay loose, reduced soreness, and allowed me to train at a higher level more consistently.”

What started as part of Olympic preparation eventually became part of everyday life. Henderson kept that same Human Touch chair for nearly 30 years, using it long after his competitive swimming career ended.

“The older I got, the more important recovery became,” he says. “Over time, the chair became part of our family’s routine too. My wife and kids all used it after workouts and activities.”

Recently, Henderson upgraded to the Human Touch Super Novo 3.0 Massage Chair and immediately noticed how much massage chair technology had evolved.

“My first thought was, ‘Why did I wait this long to upgrade?’” he says. “The full-body coverage, stretching programs, and customization are incredible. I can target exactly what my body needs depending on the day.”

Today, recovery continues to play a central role in Henderson’s fitness and wellness routine as he works on rebuilding strength and mobility following hip replacement surgery.

“Regular massage helps me manage soreness, improve circulation, and stay consistent with my workouts,” he says. “That consistency is everything.”

Through his mentorship platform, The Athletes Village, Henderson now encourages younger athletes to approach recovery with the same discipline they bring to training.

“Recovery is not optional,” he says. “Sleep, hydration, stretching, massage, all of it matters. You might get away with skipping recovery for a while, but eventually it catches up to you.”

Whether in elite athletics, business, or everyday life, Henderson believes the principle remains the same: how well you recover often determines how well you perform.
