We posted earlier this month about our work with Jim Tavare, the star of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, who was in a horrific car accident this past March. The head-on collision was nothing short of a nightmare, leaving Jim with a broken neck, 15 broken ribs, multiple breaks in his right leg, a punctured lung, and fractures in both breastbones. He spent 15 days in Intensive Care at a hospital in Los Angeles, after which he was able to go home. However, he knew that his road to recovery had only just begun.
We worked closely with his wife, Laura Tavare, to provide a Perfect Chair PC-610 Omni-Motion Classic recliner in order to alleviate some of the pain of Jim’s injuries and allow him to properly rest so that he can recover. The Manager of our Backcare Division, Mark Moritz, was able to personally deliver the PC-610 to Jim’s home, where he demonstrated how to use the chair and answered any questions.
In the month that Jim has been able to use his Perfect Chair, he and Laura shared that it’s been a huge aid in his recovery. While they’re still waiting for his surgeon’s permission to bear weight on his arms and leg, Jim has been immobile within his home. Sleeping in his bed was too uncomfortable for him, so he was relieved to find that his PC-610 has provided a sanctuary where he can get a good night’s rest. Because the chair can be relocated to any room in his house, he can also escape the confines of his bed to enjoy more public spaces of his home. According to Laura, “Jim can happily sit for hours in the Perfect Chair. Being able to recline into zero gravity brings him enormous relief.”
It has been so incredible to be a part of Jim’s journey to recovery. While our primary reward has been to help him along as he works so hard to get well, we have received a huge number of comments, messages, and emails from Jim’s friends and family as they share their thanks for our help. We look forward to Jim’s continued improvement, and will continue to update you with news of his progress.
Below are a few x-rays of Jim's "new hardware" that the Tavares were kind enough to share with us, so that our readers can better understand the gravity of Jim’s injuries, and the details of his recovery. As you can see, there has already been extensive surgical work done on his right leg and foot (shown here)

“I‘ve been a Computer Programmer, a heads-down coder, for 35 years. After spending about 20 years in the poor posture encouraged by a traditional workspace, I began to experience severe neck and shoulder pain. I am 100% convinced that the ergonomics of the “cubicle” office is what caused my back problems.
My doctor recommended that I have a C4-C5 cervical fusion, which I hoped would completely dissolve the pain. But as time went on, I discovered that my pain was still affecting my quality of life on a daily basis. After a lot of research, I found the Human Touch Perfect Chair, and have been using it for over 10 years now. Not only is it extremely comfortable, but it prevents the poor posture that caused my back pain.
Before I found the Perfect Chair, I was at a point where I would have to end my career due to my spinal issues. Since buying my Perfect Chair, I’ve actually purchased another that I take to work with me. I’m an independent contractor, and I’ve tried sitting in the “ergonomic” desks and chairs that many offices offer now. I can’t emphasize enough how passionately I feel that the Perfect Chair is the best desk option, and I ALWAYS insist on bringing my Perfect Chair into my offices in order to work from my laptop. My chair has received a lot of attention from friends and colleagues, including a friend who had her C4-C5-C6 vertebrae fused together, and now loves the Perfect Chair almost as much as I do!
I believe that if I.T. continues the way it’s going with their long, heads-down hours spent working, they will start to see serious ramifications to their health. These are folks who sit in a chair, without moving, for 10-12 hours at a time, and I can tell you first hand that the results can be detrimental.
The Perfect Chair is an incredible tool for people who spend a lot of time at their desk, and I believe that it has the ability to completely change the way we manage our work space. I would love to see more offices eliminate the traditional cubicle set-up and encourage their employees to use Perfect Chairs with laptop desks, or even a type of dual laptop desk. I am so grateful for my Perfect Chair. It has changed my life.”

LONG BEACH, CA--November 09, 2016 - Human Touch®, the U.S. market leader of innovative massage chairs, Perfect Chair Recliners, and other wellness solutions, is pleased to announce that Interactive Health, Inc., the parent to the Human Touch subsidiary, has acquired all of the outstanding preferred and common shares of Relax The Back Corporation. With the completion of the acquisition on November 4, 2016, the Relax The Back franchise is now owned and operated by Interactive Health, Inc. Specific terms of the transaction are and will remain confidential.
Relax The Back, franchisor of nearly 100 back and neck care specialty retail stores, and Human Touch, an international distributor of ergonomic seating products, have enjoyed a close, mutually successful relationship over the past twenty years. Human Touch is a major supplier of zero gravity recliners and massage chairs to the Relax The Back network. This relationship was further strengthened in 2014 when Human Touch became the franchisee of two Relax The Back stores located in the Boston area.
This acquisition is expected to have a positive impact on both companies. For Human Touch, it provides an integrated presence in the growing neck and back care market at both the wholesale and retail levels. For Relax The Back, it provides access to the resources of a larger company that is well acquainted with the market, its business and people. This mutual familiarity is expected to ease the integration of the two companies and to produce a stronger, more efficient organization.
"This is an exciting development for both companies and an opportunity to drive growth and leadership in the ergonomic spinal health care market," said David Wood, CEO of Interactive Health. "Human Touch and Relax The Back share a passion for helping people maintain an active and pain-free lifestyle. We believe the acquisition will help to make it even easier for consumers to find, experience, and maintain back care solutions that will improve their daily lives."
Dick Palfreyman, the current Chief Executive Officer for Relax The Back will be retiring on December 16, 2016 after a long and successful tenure. David Wood, Chief Executive Officer for Interactive Health, will be assuming responsibility for Relax The Back Corporation, in addition to his existing duties with Human Touch. All current Relax The Back staff at their corporate office will report up to Robert McMillan, Relax The Back CFO and head of Operations.

Human Touch, the U.S. market leader of innovative massage chairs, Perfect Chair Recliners, and other wellness solutions, has received an exclusive endorsement by the World Federation of Chiropractic (WFC) for its massage chairs as a valid supplement to back-care therapies. The WFC is a professional organization comprised of national associations of chiropractors in 88 countries, representing them and the chiropractic profession in the international community.
“The WFC is pleased to endorse Human Touch products as valuable tools in the treatment and care of back pain and spinal disorders due to their superior technology, quality, and ability to prevent or alleviate spinal stress,” said the WFC’s Secretary-General, Richard Brown. “The WFC encourages individuals with back pain to consider combining chiropractic care with the high-quality of a Human Touch massage chair or Perfect Chair recliner as an option to achieve optimum wellness.”
After thoroughly investigating Human Touch products, the WFC has concluded that Human Touch massage chairs and Zero-Gravity Perfect Chair Recliners can serve as an important tool for back pain sufferers by alleviating and preventing spinal stress, which is a leading cause of back pain and related disability. According to the WFC, over 80% of Americans will be disabled by back pain at some point during their lives, and persistent /chronic back pain is the single most disabling condition for working-age Americans.
Among the Human Touch products available, the Perfect Chair zero-gravity recliners and Ascent Series Navitas Sleep massage chairs are particularly ideal for assisting in back pain, spinal alignment, and posture.
Inspired by NASA’s neutral body posture, the Perfect Chair places the body in a virtually weightless position to provide relaxation and minimum muscle tension. In this doctor-recommended position, the spine, hips, and knee joints are on or close to the balanced midpoint of the muscles. Its sleek and elegant design and zero-gravity engineering make it a great way to relieve the soreness, tension, and fatigue caused by the constant load-bearing. The Perfect Chair comes in a variety of different styles and colors.
